Authors Guild Article

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 12th, 2009

Legionnaires,

I had an interesting article sent to me by a listener: http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2009/02/10/authors-guild-claims.html

I will admit that when I read this article I was a little miffed with the Authors Guild, and said to my self there is no way anyone would whine about text to speech. Not wanting to hold a false misconception I went to the guilds website and found the original article for my self.

First of all I would like to commend Amazon for making this feature available in the new Kindle, and second I would like to tell the Authors Guild to get a life. Before I go off about this I would like to give you the link the Article on the Authors Guild site so you can decide for yourself, you may or may not agree with me.

http://www.authorsguild.org/advocacy/articles/e-book-rights-alert-amazons-kindle-2.html

I’m not a member of the guild and I suspect they wouldn’t have me, I’m a podcast author and in essence everything I do goes against the grain of the publishing industry. For one I give my stuff away for free, you can listen to my books without charge and if you like them you can give them to a friend and it doesn’t bother me in the least bit. My only real preference for people downloading my work from legonbook.com or podiobooks.com is so I know how many people are downloading my stuff it gives me warm fuzzies all over to see the numbers go up. So as an author I feel justified in commenting on this stupidity.

“Audiobooks surpassed $1 billion in sales in 2007; e-book sales are just a small fraction of that. While the audio quality of the Kindle 2, judging from Amazon’s promotional materials, is best described as serviceable, it’s far better than the text-to-speech audio of just a few years ago. We expect this software to improve rapidly.” – Guild Article

Are you serious? I don’t care how good the speech gets it’s still a computer don’t get me wrong HAL was a talker but these people bought a copy of the ebook if they want to have a computer read it to them or there mom it shouldn’t make a difference.

“The remarks have been interpreted by some as suggesting that the Guild believes that private out-loud reading is protected by copyright. It isn’t, unless the reading is being done by a machine. And even out-loud reading by a machine is fine, of course, if it’s from an authorized audio copy.” – Guild Article

Ok so let me get this straight mom can read to you, that’s cool but my computer can’t?

“Others suggest that challenging Amazon’s use of this software challenges accessibility to the visually impaired. It doesn’t: Kindle 2 isn’t designed for such use. The Guild continues to support efforts to make works truly accessible to the visually impaired.” – Guild Article

Wow Amazon should send the Guild a thank you card for clearing up what they were trying to accomplish and here this whole time I was under the misconception that they were trying to sell books.
This is yet another example of the dinosaur side of the publishing industry making its death throws heard. If the Kindle was downloading the audiobook and playing that at no extra charge fine get pissed but to say that it can’t read to someone is ludicrous. The only part of the industry hurt by the Kindle is the printing companies, people will still buy audiobooks, those of us who listen to them normally listen in the car or at work, the files are on our MP3 players with all of our other music. The Kindle is hardly something you can strap to your arm when you go for a run. Further more many of the things people like about audiobooks is that it’s a performance, you get all of the different voices to bring you into the action, text to speech will likely never have that ability. More over this is a slight to the vision impaired community, what’s next will they not be allowed to have there computer read them the news?

Ok I’m going to stop going off now, but I will leave you with this, when my books are available on the Kindle I don’t care if you have the Kindle read them to you, your mom, dad or anyone, just so long as you tell a friend :)

tell me what you think…
